Juno Counsel in-house legal community

Deadlines are closing in, calendars are filling up, and the silly season is... here already? Christmas starts to look more like a deadline rather than a holiday. But you don't need to get swept up in the rush. Take the time to read these insights and register for some much needed, end-of-year CPD (don't leave it all until March!).

This month, we hear from the Serko legal team, who share how smart tools and collaboration are helping them with an exciting global acquisition. David Dunbar reflects on a full career defined by adaptability, relationships, and leadership, offering lessons from experience for anyone seeking meaning in their work. And our Juno Learning webinar “Head, meet Heart” explores how balancing IQ and EQ helps us stay clear, focused and ahead.

And it wouldn't be a November intro without mentioning The Mo. Movember. Men's health. Check. Support. Share. Don't let the season's silliness get in the way of staying sharp, steady, and well.

Pānui tonu, read on...

Serko Legal Team

TEAM OVERVIEW: Serko legal team

With a global acquisition on their plate, Serko’s legal team is using collaboration and innovative tech to stay ahead. We spoke with the team about how smart tools and seamless collaboration are helping them manage complexity, avoid roadblocks, and stay focused on what matters most.
"If in-house teams are involved early, they can spot the issues themselves before they develop – but teams don’t have the capacity to review everything that goes on, nor would the business want them to."

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: David Dunbar, Medical Council of New Zealand

David Dunbar, Medical Council NZ

David Dunbar’s career has taken him from legislative reform to shaping health sector regulations, and leadership roles. We had the pleasure of chatting with him as he reflects on what makes a fulfilling in-house career—balancing legal skills with influence and connection.

"For me, a big part of the role has been relational, not just procedural... connections make the work real and bring home a sense of its impact."

Register for JUNO LEARNING ONLINE CPD: Head, meet Heart

In many professions, especially those that prize intellect, it’s easy to become stuck in our heads. The question becomes... are you getting the results you want?

Join us for Head, meet Heart, a Juno Learning CPD lunchtime webinar, where psychologist and Corporate Coach, Molly Ireland, will guide us through practical tools to balance IQ and EQ for better decision-making, stronger relationships, and greater balance in your work life.

Learn to:

- Differentiate between cognitive and embodied states for more effective decision-making and impact.

- Understand the importance of balancing neurological states to reduce stress.

- Introduction to a “whole self” communication tool to improve relationships.

📅 Monday, 2 Dec, 12-1pm
✅ CPD: 1 hour
👐 Open to all. Designed with in-house lawyers in mind. No registration fee

December can get a bit nuts, but setting aside one lunchtime to focus on balance and clarity might be just what you need to tackle the season with ease. Pretty good timing.

Register for 'Head, meet Heart' here.

WHAT WE ARE READING: Grim tales...

Some unforgettable (but not exactly cheerful) books recommended by our Juno team:

📚 The Lasting Harm: Witnessing the Ghislaine Maxwell Trial by Lucia Osborne-Crawley – A raw, firsthand account of a high-profile trial, highlighting survivors' stories and systemic flaws.

🎲 Dice by Claire Baylis – A courtroom drama that shifts perspectives to the jurors, exploring how we judge guilt and innocence.

💀 Cause of Death by Cynric Temple-Camp – Tales from a New Zealand pathologist’s most bizarre cases, with proceeds going to the rescue helicopter service.

OFFICE HACKS: Get more from your AI prompts

When using Large Language Models (LLM) like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, etc, try ending your next prompt with this:
“Reflect on your answer before responding. Use three methods, provide examples, and confirm that your response aligns with the question. Do you understand?”

E.g.:

- “Generate a checklist for reviewing [contract type]. Reflect on whether this is comprehensive and explain your reasoning. Do you understand?”

- “Suggest alternative solutions for [problem]. Compare three approaches and highlight the pros and cons of each. Do you understand?”

This small addition can make basic, wayward answers sharper, lessening the back and forth. Karawhiua - give it a go.
