Juno Counsel in-house legal community

No one likes being called an egg, but bear with us for a moment…

In-house legal teams are like eggs in a carton—each one is special, distinct, and a bit cautious of risk. As the egg, it can be easy to forget about others in the same carton as you; that supportive network that connects and strengthens each egg, your community.

In this month’s Juno Carton Counsel, we get the privilege of spotlighting the thriving in-house legal community around us: Vicky Lee from Fortysouth shares her journey of setting up a legal function from scratch. We also feature Paul Gillard’s reflections on a four-decade legal career, offering insights from various sectors and the ways in-house has changed over time. And Juno Lawyer Mitch Julian reassures us that generative AI doesn’t require panic or retraining. It’s becoming intuitive and, with a bit of confidence and practice, actually can enhance our work.

Plus, don’t miss our Juno Learning CPD events across the motu next month, where we’ll be hosting panel discussions on Building Influence. Join us to hear from experienced explorers with your coll-egg-ues (sorry, couldn't resist).

Vicky Lee, General Counsel, Fortysouth

SPOTLIGHT: Vicky Lee, Fortysouth

We’re thrilled to reconnect with Juno Alumna Vicky Lee about her role as General Counsel at Fortysouth. Vicky shares what it's like being the sole lawyer behind Aotearoa’s 'digital motorway':

"Being prepared to get stuck in and do jobs that I may not have expected to be within my role has been a common theme but I’ve enjoyed seeing things from different angles as a result."

We celebrate Paul Gillard's in-house legal career spanning four decades. He shares stories from when in-house lawyers were seen as ‘second rate’, to defining moments where he could bring significant value.

OFFICE HACKS: Quick Parts, for commonly used text

Office Hacks - Quick parts-1

When writing legal documents, certain pieces of text come up over and over again. Cut down on time spent copying and pasting between documents with the Quick Parts Gallery feature in Word. Quick Parts lets you create, store, and reuse pieces of content—i.e., building blocks—in a gallery that’s easy to access. Navigate to Insert to find it, and learn how to create a Quick Parts here.

Handy tip: If you've got Juno's Clause Bank on Word File, keep some of these clauses in Quick Parts for easy access. Visit Juno's online Clause Bank here.

WHAT WE ARE READING

🧠 Stewart Brand's clever take on how civilisation stays resilient by balancing fast-paced innovation with slow, stabilising traditions through "Pace Layers"—different levels in a system that each move at their own speed - it might seem a bit abstract, it really boils down to how we balance change with continuity in our everyday lives

🌟Jemima Montag's journey to winning two Olympic bronze medals shows how sport can bring people together, support mental health, and teach valuable life skills—core ideas in her "Play On" initiative. Timely, as Aotearoa's NZ's Mental Health Awareness Week is next month.
