Mental health and wellbeing for in-house lawyers

In-house legal roles can be rewarding, while they also come with distinct pressures. High expectations, shifting priorities, and the need to respond quickly to internal stakeholders can make it hard to pause and prioritise your own wellbeing. Layer in the traits many lawyers bring to the role, like perfectionism, a strong sense of responsibility, or always needing to be ‘on’, and it’s easy to see how energy and clarity can wear down over time.

Register to join our lunchtime webinar with clinical psychologist Jacqui Maguire, who has spent the past decade supporting lawyers across Aotearoa. Drawing on recent research (including her work advising the Life Squared Trust’s landmark mental health study of New Zealand lawyers) and her experience on the ground, Jacqui will explore what supports, and undermines, wellbeing in legal roles.

Focusing on the in-house environment, she’ll offer practical, evidence-based strategies to help you take care of yourself and better support those you work with, whether in your legal team, across the business, or at home.

What you’ll gain:

  • Understand the key factors that influence mental health and wellbeing in the legal profession, including insights from recent New Zealand research.
  • Explore the specific pressures and opportunities within in-house legal roles, such as reactive workflows, stakeholder complexity, and organisational visibility.
  • Gain practical, evidence-based strategies to support your own wellbeing and to recognise and respond to signs of strain in others—colleagues, teams, or personal networks.
